Popularity of Destination Weddings on the Rise

Article by Diego

Destination weddings at enchanting locations like St. Lucia, Tobago and Mexico’s Riviera Maya are growing in popularity for romantic couples hoping to make their special day even more memorable. While honeymoons at luxurious far away destinations have long been part of many couples’ wedding plans there is a growing trend for the modern couple to go one step further by saying their “I do’s” at some of the world’s finest holiday destinations in tropical settings like the Caribbean.

Couples planning to say their “I do’s” know all too well that location is a key component of an unforgettable wedding ceremony. In a bid to make that special day even more memorable current reports would suggest that more and more couples are turning to destination weddings as opposed to more traditional weddings at home.

Beautiful locations best known for their white sandy beaches and calm turquoise waters like the Caribbean’s Tobago, St. Lucia, Barbados and Mexico’s Riviera Maya have proven to be popular among couples planning the ultimate romantic beach wedding.

A report coming from U.S. based consultancy firm, Forever I Do Weddings, which specialises in weddings abroad predicted that 2012 is set to be a record breaking year for destination weddings with a 60 per cent increase in the number of couples choosing to get married abroad in the period January-May 2012 when compared to the same period in 2011.

Mexico is one key location that has acknowledged the growing popularity of “wedding tourism” and its contribution to the wider tourism industry. Approximately 24 per cent of all U.S. couples are said to opt for island weddings in tropical locations and an impressive 9 per cent of them turn to Mexico for their special day. In light of this, the Mexican Tourism Board in collaboration with Mexico Wed recently hosted their “Love Mexico” networking event at Dallas and New York which brought together over 180 wedding planners from North America and representatives from some of the best hotels in the Riviera Maya along with other key stakeholders in Mexico’s tourism industry.

The events were aimed at promoting all that Mexican locations like the Riviera Maya offer to couples contemplating getting married abroad and searching for that romantic wedding package deal. Executive meeting unit director at the Mexico Tourism Board, Eduardo Chaillo stated, “we were delighted with the response to this year’s Love Mexico events; all of the vendors and buyers that I spoke to had great feedback. With its combination of natural beauty, rich culture, world-class hotels and resorts and outstanding service, Mexico is the ultimate destination for weddings, honeymoons and romantic getaways. As the destination weddings market grows and changes Mexico will continue to develop its offering”.
