Cross Timbers Trail at Lake Texoma – The Toughest Little Trail in Texas

Article by LakeHub

Known by the locals as “toughest little trail in Texas” the Cross Timbers Trail runs along fourteen miles of the south shores of Lake Texoma. The lake, located 90 minutes north of the Fort Worth and Dallas metroplex is the 2nd largest lake in Texas. Texoma straddles the Texas/Oklahoma border along the red river. The trails close proximity to Dallas/Fort Worth and moderate difficulty makes it a great option as a weekend warrior adventure. You’ll see some incredible wildlife including hawks, blue jays, owls, woodpeckers, deer, coyote, and armadillo. As you jump on the trail at Juniper Point West, near highway 377, you’ll notice that the first few miles soar above the lake on rocky ledges then wind down to Cedar Bayou resort. This is the last spot to bed down one of a dozen comfortable lake texoma cabins before you rough it with primitive camping on the rest of the trail. Also grab a meal at Cedar Bayou floating dock restaurant if you are visiting during the summer.

The trail then heads west from Cedar Bayou to Lost Camp loop. This segment of the trail includes some tricky elevations and scenic thick oak wilderness. You’ll find plenty of options for primitive camping along the several mile Lost Camp loop. It’ll be another few miles to 5 mile camp, the next primitive camping spot and 5 miles from the trailhead.

After five mile camp the trail starts to ascend a couple miles to another primitive camping location, eagles roost camp. Once you reach Eagles Roost, the trail turns level as it sticks to an old a dirt road and wooden bridge. You’ll then twist around to Paw Paw Creek Resort and traverse Rock Creek then end at Rock Creek Camp, another primitive camp located just off rock creek camp road. Rock Creek camp is located on Rock Creek Road, it makes a great place to be picked up after the 14 mile journey. If you have a free weekend, make a run up to Lake Texoma and give the “toughest little train in texas” a try!
